By Frances Borsodi Zajac 5 min read

Sparkle, the Christmas star, is pleased to announce that Herald-Standard readers have donated another $1,243 to the 2003 Give A Christmas campaign. This raises the total to $11,855.38. “This is great! Thank you so much for your donations,’ said Sparkle, who is the official mascot for the campaign. “But remember that we want to raise $40,000 for the Salvation Army by Tuesday at noon. I know we can do it if we all pitch in. The final amount will be announced in the Christmas Eve edition of the Herald-Standard and I know we all want to see the Salvation Army receive the total amount.’

The latest donations came from Star Junction, Richeyville, Vanderbilt, Uniontown, Keisterville, Crucible, New Salem, Ohiopyle, Fairchance, Lemont Furnace, Republic, Merrittstown and Brownsville.

They included a $300 donation from Frances and David Abel of Uniontown, a $200 donation from Mike and Dorie Liptak of Uniontown, and $100 donations from Frank and Lois Smoley of Keisterville, the United Methodist and Ohiopyle Baptist Church Sunday Schools, Well-Doers of Hopewell in Merrittstown.

Other groups that participated included Great Bethel Baptist Church Martha Champion Class of Uniontown and Republic Lions Club.

“Thank you all so much,’ said Sparkle. “We appreciate every penny.’

Sparkle also received some Christmas cards and nice notes from:

“Dear Sparkle, Enclosed is our annual contribution. For us, it is also a ‘thank’ offering. We are so grateful to God for providing us with the means to make certain our children and other family members always have a nice Christmas.’ Gwendolyn and Louis Ridgley of Uniontown.

“Dear Sparkle, I hope you make your goal. I hope this check helps.’ Margaret Molchan of Star Junction.

“In loving memory of my beautiful granddaughter Heather Lynn Garbutt, who passed away Dec. 7, 2002. Heather was always loving and kind. “Dear Sparkle, Hope you make your goal this year. So many people have been laid off or their hours cut. I’m a little later getting my cards. Many good wishes for another successful year! Merry Christmas.’ Anonymous.

“Thank you all for such nice messages. We really appreciate them all,’ said Sparkle. “And to those of you who are thinking about contributing, please do it now. We only have a few days left in the campaign and we really want to help the Salvation Army.

“Remember,’ she continued. “All your contributions go to the Salvation Army unit that serves your neighborhood so all your contributions will be used to help your neighbors in need. At Christmastime, it’s especially nice to remember them.’
