Masontown man dies a day after auto accident
A Masontown man died Saturday from injuries he sustained in an automobile accident Friday afternoon in Cumberland Township, Greene County. Donald A. Stabile, 46, of 208 Cumberland Ave. died in Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va., at 11:41 a.m. Saturday.
Cumberland Township Police Chief William Lewis Sr. was called to the West Greene Street crash scene, where he observed mailboxes, posts and bushes downed by Stabile’s vehicle.
According to Lewis, Stabile said he blacked out at the time of the accident and upon waking, he did not know where he was. Lewis said he found Stabile a few feet from his car, lying on an embankment.
“We thought he had a broken hip. The paramedics said he had to be ejected from the car,” said Lewis. “I don’t see how he could have been ejected. All windows on the vehicle were in place. There was no indication of him getting ejected.
“He refused treatment at first, though they did life-flight him to Ruby Memorial in West Virginia, from what I know,” Lewis added.
News of Stabile’s death took Lewis by surprise, and he said he thought Stabile would have survived.
Crews from EMS Southwest Ambulance Service from Carmichaels also responded to the scene.
Born in Morgantown, W.Va., Stabile was the son of the late Anthony Stabile and Kathryn Shaffer Stabile.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Leckrone and employed as a auto body man at Pro Auto in Carmichaels.
He is survived by his wife, Pamela S. Fenton Jenkins; his son, Richard Jenkins, of Masontown; a sister, Tony Marie Stabile Barnes, and her husband, P. J. Barnes, of Euclid, Ohio; a sister, Debbie Marie Stabile Stalnaker, and her husband, David Stalnaker; and grandsons, Richard Jenkins and Anthony Jenkins, all of Masontown.
The family will receive friends in the John S. Maykuth Jr. Funeral Home, corner of Church and River avenues, Masontown, today from 7 to 9 p.m., and Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
A blessing service will be held in the funeral home chapel Tuesday at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Donald Trexler officiating. Interment will be private in St. Mary’s Church Cemetery, Leckrone.
