Southeastern Greene project offers second chance at high school diploma
Community Action Southwest, along with the Southeastern Greene School District, has begun. the Dropout Reclamation Project. The project will give adults in the Southeastern Greene School District who have never received their high school diploma a second chance to do so.
Participants will meet with Community Action Southwest adult education instructors to work on an individualized program that will help them meet the required credits needed for graduation. The Southeastern Greene School Board has agreed to confer a diploma on those individuals who successfully complete the program.
The project was developed by Community Action Southwest Family Development Director Dr. Barbara Mooney.
Mooney modeled this alternative to the GED high school equivalency diploma test from other similar programs in the Pittsburgh and Harrisburg areas.
School officials report that the recent census shows just less than 25 percent of the adults living in the district have fewer than 12 years of formal schooling, and as Greene County moves toward creating and attracting more technology-related jobs, the county will need more skilled employees.
The high school diploma is the first step toward post-secondary training and employment.
Outreach for the project begins this month. Daytime sessions will be offered at the Greensboro Family Center, located in the former Penn Pitt School, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Evening sessions will be available Mondays and Wednesdays at Mapletown High School.
