Sister Romayne (Anna) Slaboda, OSBM
Sister Romayne (Anna) Slaboda, a member of the Uniontown Province of the Sisters of St. Basil the Great for 75 years, died Monday, February 3, 2003 at Mount Macrina Manor. Sister Romayne was born in Trebjsov, Slovakia on April 17, 1905 to the late Joseph and Barbara (Bumbera) Slaboda. She entered the Sisters of St. Basil the Great from St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church in Trenton, N.J. on April 23, 1928. She pronounced her First Vows on April 10, 1930 and made her Final Profession on November 14, 1933 in the presence of the late Rev. Eugene Runtaugh in Factoryville, Pa.
Sister Romayne spent the greatest part of her religious life as a teacher in the parish schools of the Metropolia staffed by the Sisters. She taught at every level from kindergarten through high school, serving as both principal and teacher at times. Sister Romayne also served as a member of the Renewal Team for the community. In her later years, Sister Romayne continued to teach part-time and to offer clerical services as needed. When failing health curtailed her activities, she returned to the Monastery where she participated in the Prayer Ministry, later becoming a resident at Mount Macrina Manor.
Sister Romayne was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Rev. Joseph Slaboda and her sister Barbara Yuhase.
In addition to her Sisters in community, Sister is survived by her devoted sister Mary Yager, her nephew John David Yager and her niece Barbara Ann Tomaski.
Relatives and friends will be received at the Monastery Chapel today, from 3:30 to 9 p.m. The Parastas Service will be sung this evening at 7 p.m. The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated on Thursday at 10:30 a.m., in the Monastery Chapel.
Interment will follow in the Dormition Section of Mount Macrina Cemetery. HAKY FUNERAL HOMES, INC., Uniontown, is in charge of arrangements.
