CYS staff may get training to handle difficult clients

By Jennifer Harr 2 min read

Fayette County Commissioners agreed Tuesday to consider training for the staff of Children and Youth Services that would aid them with difficult clients. Executive Director David Madison asked the commissioners to consider a 2-day pressure points and control tactics training seminar for the CYS staff.

“We’ve been confronted with some potentially hostile clients from time to time,” said Madison.

At a cost of $449, the session will teach staff members to decelerate a potentially violent situation.

Commissioner Sean M. Cavanagh said he thought the class was a good idea for CYS workers.

“The front line people going into the homes have the most important job in the county,” said Cavanagh, referring to CYS workers who remove children from their parents’ care.

Madison said his staff is already trained yearly on CPR and First Aid techniques.

Additionally, he asked the commissioners to consider a request to advertise for nine computers for the CYS office. Madison said the county purchased 18 computers four years ago, but the warranty on those has since expired and the machines are “starting to drop.”

He said the hard drives are going bad in some of the computers, and noted that the nine computers are budgeted for the CYS office for this year.

Cavanagh said the county is fast approaching the time where it should take a cue from neighboring Westmoreland and Washington counties, which employ computer experts.

Commission Chairman Vincent A. Vicites agreed, noting that such an expert could pinpoint and help solve computer problems and work toward in-house computer systems for the county.

Commissioner Ronald Nehls said the county could possibly be wasting money since a computer expert is not in place.
