Police arrest Uniontown man on drug charges
City police arrested Jerry Arthur Harris Jr., 34, of 55 Dunlap St., Uniontown, early Monday morning on an outstanding drug warrant and filed an additional firearm violation charge against him. Patrolmen Dave Rutter and Donald Gmitter said that while on routine patrol they spotted Harris in a vehicle at the intersection of Morgantown and Fayette streets a little after midnight.
Gmitter said he approached the car, identified Harris and saw him reach for something on the floor of the car. After Harris was taken into custody, police said, they found a 410-caliber handgun on the floor of the vehicle.
Harris was arraigned before District Justice Rick Vernon on charges of firearms not to be carried without a license and receiving stolen property. Police said the gun, belonging to a Smock man, was stolen.
According to an affidavit filed in Vernon’s office, Harris was wanted on possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, possession of a controlled or counterfeit substance and criminal conspiracy charges filed Jan. 14 for an incident that happened Nov. 1 in the Uniontown Mall parking lot. Police allege that Harris sold a confidential informant 41/2 ounces of cocaine for $3,750.
Police said the drugs were analyzed and confirmed to be cocaine.
Harris was placed in the Fayette County Prison in lieu of 10 percent of $100,000 bond on the drug charges and 10 percent of $50,000 bond on the weapons violation.
