Point Marion council reviews flood plans
POINT MARION – Amid concerns about potential flooding this weekend, the borough council, during its meeting Wednesday, discussed procedures the community should use if the rivers overflow their banks. President Ted Shaffer said the council wants the community to be as prepared as possible for potential flooding.
“There are no problems at the present time. The river is down,” said Shaffer. “But, if we get that inch of rain forecasters are predicting, plus an inch of snow runoff, we could have some problems.”
Shaffer said the borough has flood plans in place: “The council is prepared to handle the situation should the river reach flood stage.”
People who might need to evacuate their residences will be housed in the United Methodist Church on Morgantown Street, said Shaffer.
In other matters, the council acknowledged a letter of resignation from Treasurer Bob Daugherty, effective Saturday. Daugherty gave no reasons for his resignation.
Shaffer said Art Strimel, who already serves as secretary, would fill the vacant position.
“I was treasurer for a period of time prior to Mr. Daugherty,” said Strimel. “I can do the work. It will be an easier transition for the borough, having someone step right into the job.”
