Dunbar to sponsor child identification program
DUNBAR – Councilwoman Kathy Dynes said she is excited that the borough is planning to sponsor a children’s identification program in April. “I think this is a wonderful program and I am glad that council can be a part of it,” said Dynes, who is also head of the health and safety committee.
Dynes said letters would be sent to local business owners over the next couple of days explaining how the program works and asking for their financial participation.
“The cost of the program is about $900,” said Dynes, “so we intend to ask business owners to help out with the costs.”
Dynes said the program is simple and something that all parents will want to take part in.
“All parents and children have to do is show up at the police station on April 5 between noon and 2 p.m. and police chief Mike Garlowich will take the children’s fingerprints,” said Dynes.
“After that, the kids and parents will proceed to the borough office next door where their photo will be taken and personal information, such as color of eyes and hair and height and weight, will be taken.”
Dynes said after that, the information will be typed on a card and laminated.
“I think it’s so nice that parents will have vital information at their fingertips if something bad should happen to their child, and we will keep a card on record here at the borough building in case the parent looses the card,” she said.
Dynes said council is not charging parents to produce the cards and that is why they are asking business owners to contribute to the program.
“We will acknowledge every business that donates to this program,” said Dynes. “In addition, each child will receive a water bottle, a safe child sticker and an eraser.”
Dynes said all donations should be received by March 11.
In other matters, council:
– Commended the street department for doing a good job with snow removal. Councilman William Watson said the men worked day and night to make sure that residents could get out of their homes.
Secretary Rachelle Hughes said she received a number of phone calls commending the street crew on their hard work.
Councilman Redding Bunting agreed but said, “All of the overtime is going to hit the budget hard.”
– Reminded residents that the North Fayette County Municipal Authority will be checking the pressure in fire hydrants in the borough through mid-March.
