Dunbar mayor suggests starting child identification programs

By Jackie Beranek 2 min read

DUNBAR – Mayor Herman Izzo and Councilwoman Kathlene Dynes told council that they want Police Chief Mike Garlowich to begin bicycle registration and child identification programs in the spring. Izzo said the child identification program has proven effective in other communities where children have gone missing.

“I think it’s a great idea,” said Izzo. “We’ll have the police take fingerprints and photos of children who live in the borough. Then if something should happen to one or more of our children, at least the parents would have vital information at their fingertips to help police search for them.”

Councilman Frank Zadell reported that the borough may be able to save a substantial amount of money on a police car through the Government Acquisitions Vehicle Procurement Program. Zadell said that the program signs up sponsors to offset the cost of police cars and other emergency vehicles and then sells the vehicles to municipalities for $1.

He also said after using the police car for three years, the borough would sell it back to program for $1 and purchase another new vehicle for $1.

“I know this sounds too good to be true,” said Zadell, “but I had our solicitor (Doug Sepic) go over the paperwork and he said it looks good. The only hitch is that the police car will have signs advertising the sponsors.”

Zadell said he would call other state municipalities who have signed up with the program to find out what kind of experiences they have had.

Izzo, in his yearly police report, said police responded to a 237 incidents, issued 95 traffic citations, 41 traffic warnings, 12 non traffic citations, served five warrants, filed eight criminal charges, assisted 11 other police agencies, transported two prisoners and issued 18 ordinance violations.

Izzo additionally said the police vehicle traveled 10,109 miles.
