NWTF chapter hosting hunt for handicapped sportsmen

3 min read

The Shenandoah Valley Ghost Gobblers (Ohio) have announced their intentions to host a Wheelin’ Sportsman “Ultimate Team-Up”. The Ghost Gobblers are a local chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, NWTF, and they are located in Noble County, Ohio.

The Wheelin’ Sportsman is an outreach program of the NWTF whose goal is to promote and provide people with disabilities the opportunity to have a positive outdoor experience.

An “Ultimate Team-Up” is an event where a local chapter, community group, or corporation “team-up” a handicapped person with an able bodied individual. The event is usually a hunt and the Ghost Gobblers are planning a spring turkey hunt, which is scheduled for May 3-4 during the Ohio turkey season.

The schedule will have hunters arriving at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 2 at the Noble County Fairgrounds, headquarters for the entire event, where all the activities will take place.

At that time, the hunters will meet their hunting partners. The hunters must have a certifiable handicap, which could be physical or mental.

In addition, all hunters must have an Ohio hunting license or posses the ability to attain one.

The chapter will pay for all license and tags, except for the out of state participants. Non-resident hunters will receive a $25 discount on their license.

The hunting partners are all local volunteers who will be acting as guides to take the participants to some of the best turkey hunting in the state of Ohio.

The chapter is still looking for outside funding to help pay for the cost. As mentioned above, the meals, license, and tags for hunters and guides will be provided at no cost. Camping for the hunters will also be available at no addition cost. However, if a participant wishes to stay at a local hotel they will incur the cost.

All hunters will have to pre-register by April 1 and can do so by calling Mike at 740-732-7105, Danny at 740-732-7000, James at 740-732-0001, or Chris at 740-732-0320. Space will be limited and a first come first serve theory will be implemented.

The number of qualified guides available will determine the number of hunters. The Ghost Gobblers are hoping to have at least 50 and they are shooting for 100. Also, hunters do not need turkey-hunting experience.

Any individual, community group, or corporation wanting to make a contribution, volunteer, or attend the public portion of this spectacular event, may call the numbers above for more details.
