Andrew Steve Zaksek
Andrew Steve Zaksek, 90, of Uniontown, Pa., died Monday, January 27, 2003 at LaFayette Manor Nursing Home. He was born January 6, 1913 in Continental #3, a son of the late Martin and Josephine Thomasvich Zaksek. His parents, wife, Anna Kauchuk Zaksek, two brothers, Martin Zaksek and Frank Zaksek and two sisters, Elizabeth Verbus and Helen Funtal, preceded him in death.
Andrew was a member of St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church, a past member of St. Mary’s Nativity Roman Catholic Church where he served as an usher for many years, a past member of the St. Mary’s Holy Name Society and a member and volunteer for the St. Vincent DePaul Society.
He was a coal miner most of his life and retired from Rockwell Meters of Uniontown. He was a member of United Mine Workers of America District #2, a lifetime member and 13th member of the Original Charter of the Hutchinson Sportsman’s Club, Hopwood, Pa.; a member of the Polish Club, Knights of Columbus of the Third Degree – Fayette Chapter, Amend Sportsman’s Club, the Pennsylvania Trappers’ Association, and the National Trappers’ Association. He was an avid bowler and bingo player and was a great fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Although he was a rather small man by stature, he had a giant presence emanated by his generosity and kindness to others, always from the heart. Although he will be sadly missed, his love, patience and dedication will be remembered and forever held dear in our hearts.
Surviving are his children, Andrew V. Zaksek, Michael R. Zaksek and Marlene A. Goodwin, all of Uniontown and with whom he made his home; Nicholas J. Zaksek and wife Barbara of Mount Pleasant, Pa. and Kenneth M. Zaksek of West Leisenring, Pa.; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Mike Zaksek of North Carolina and Joseph Zaksek of Perryopolis, Pa.; a sister, Josephine Vesley of Vanderbilt, Pa.; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received in the HAKY FUNERAL HOMES, INC., A Dignity Memorial Provider, 139 W. Fayette St., Uniontown, Pa., today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday until 11 a.m., when a Panachida Service will be held, followed by a Divine Liturgy at 11:30 a.m., in St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church, with the Rev. Fr. Thomas J. Wesdock as celebrant.
Interment will follow in St. John the Baptist Byzantine Cemetery, Hopwood, Pa.
Parastas Service will be held this evening at 7 p.m.
