Herbert O. Zelmar (Zelmore)

Herbert O. Zelmar (Zelmore), 74, of Shoaf, Pa., passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, in Mount Saint Macrina Manor, Uniontown, Pa.

He was born Feb. 21, 1928, in Shoaf, Pa., the son of the late Edward and Augusta Karwatski Zelmar.

Mr. Zelmar was a lifelong member of the Jacob’s Lutheran Church in Masontown, and a retired UMWA coal miner from Cumberland Mine, after working for 44 years in the coal fields, including Wynn Construction, Wynn Coal and Coke, Ruane Coal and Coke, Highland Construction, Smithfield Construction and Menallen Coke Company.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, and the National Guard at Camp Atterbury.

Herbert loved reading his Bible and enjoyed helping others when they were in need.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman, loved all sports, especially Trap Shooting, traveling and growing flower gardens. He belonged to the Fayette Gun Club, the Fairchance Rod and Gun Club and Hutchinson Sportsmen’s Club. A graduate of Georges Township High School, with the Class of 1946, he attended Machinist classes at the Fayette County Vocational Technical School.

Herbert was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Adeline and brother-in-law, James Maldovan; a brother, Robert Zelmar and sister-in-law, Joan and a brother, Edward Zelmar, killed in action in World War II. Herb was the last living member of his family.

He is survived by his loving wife of 21 years, Geraldine Dorsey Zelmar; a nephew, James Maldovan and wife, Andra of Singapore; a nephew, Daniel Maldovan and wife, Jill of Baltimore, Ohio; a great-niece, Mariah Maldovan; three great-nephews, Matthew and Mark Maldovan and Keaton Newsom; and many other loving relatives and wonderful friends.

The family will receive friends in the DEAN C. WHITMARSH FUNERAL HOME, 134 West Church St., Fairchance, PA 15436, today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Additional viewing will be held on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, in the Jacob’s Lutheran Church, Masontown, Pa., from 10 to 11 a.m. Services begin at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Bernard Carl officiating. Interment will follow in Jacob’s Lutheran Cemetery, Masontown, Pa.
