Rev. Sawyer to assume senior chaplain position

The Rev. Timothy W. Sawyer will assume the position of senior chaplain through the Good News Jail and Prison Ministry at the Washington County Jail in Washington, on April 1. He is also the chaplain of the Indiana County Jail in Indiana, Pa., under the same ministry. Born in Buffalo, N.Y., he is the son of Geraldine Sawyer of Masontown and the late Rev. William A. Sawyer. He is married to the former Donita Pierce and has a stepson, Justin Turner.

Rev. Sawyer, who is the former pastor of the Triune Baptist Church in Wilkinsburg, Pa., is a 1977 graduate of the Uniontown Area Senior High School. He is currently enrolled in the Masters of Ministry program at the Andersonville Theological Seminary in Camilla, Ga.

Rev. Sawyer has had varied employment experiences. He was formerly employed as a security police officer at the Westmoreland County Juvenile Detention Center in Greensburg. He was also an advocate counselor for CATY Services in Pittsburgh in the foster care program. Rev. Sawyer has also worked for Allied Security of Pittsburgh where he held the rank of captain and handled and supervised accounts and security personnel in the areas of downtown Pittsburgh, UPMC and Carlow College in the Oakland area of Pittsburgh.

He is a Protestant chaplain at SCI-Somerset in Somerset. He is part of the full-time staff and co-pastors the United Men of Integrity and Deliverance Church.

He belongs to the Youghiogheny Western Baptist Association (Y.W.B.A.) and is a member of the executive board. He has held the position of field missionary for the past three years with the Y.W.B.A. In this position, he visits over 33 churches in the association during the year to promote the association, handle any complaints, counsel churches on association matters and to fill in for churches that may be without a pastor. His father held this same position as well as the position of moderator of the association.

Rev. Sawyer is active in his community. He is a certified member of the American Association of Christian Counselors. He is a former member of the Jeannette Lions where he served as secretary. He is a current member of the board of trustees for the Westmoreland County Community College in Youngwood, and serves as the chairman of the facilities committee. Rev. Sawyer also served on the board for the Westmoreland/Fayette County of the Boy Scouts of America. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Westmoreland County Community Foundation.
