Teen charged in fatal accident
DUNBAR TWP. – A 19-year-old Uniontown man has been charged with vehicular homicide in the November death of John R. Nahar, 36, of Dunbar. According to criminal complaint filed with District Justice Dwight Shaner, Dunbar, by state police at Uniontown, Fred Eugene Taylor III, of 34 St. James Drive was also charged with reckless driving, careless driving and failure to comply with traffic-control signals.
State police said the accident happened at the intersection of Route 119 and Pechin Road on Nov. 30 at about 7:15 p.m. as Nahar, his wife Joyce L. Nahar, 29, and son, Michael Alan Mason, 8, were attempting to make a left turn onto Route 119.
Police said Nahar had a green light. They also said that Taylor, who was traveling north on Route 119, failed to stop on the red signal at the intersection. Nahar was driving a 1984 Mercury Marquis while Taylor was driving a 1997 Jeep Wrangler.
Nahar was transported to Highlands Hospital in Connellsville where he was pronounced dead in the emergency room at 8:09 p.m.
After an initial examination, Fayette County Coroner Dr. Phillip Reilly said Nahar died from blunt force injuries to the left hip and pelvis and left thighbone and pelvic fractures. Reilly said the injuries caused extensive internal bleeding.
The criminal complaint said, “Evidence at the scene and interviews with witnesses indicate that the defendant’s failure to stop at a steady red traffic signal was the cause of the collision.”
The affidavit also said that Fayette County District Attorney Nancy Vernon was consulted about the collision and advised the police to file the homicide by vehicle charge and the three traffic violations.
According to police, Nahar’s wife and son were uninjured while Taylor suffered minor injuries.
A preliminary hearing date has not yet been set for Taylor.
