Supervisors approve 7-year cable agreement
MENALLEN – The township supervisors approved a seven-year, cable franchise agreement with Charter Communications during a regular meeting Thursday. Chairman Robert “Tweety” Yatsko said the township decided to extend its agreement with Charter after meeting with the cable company last month.
The new agreement, which will go into effect Monday, will provide senior citizens with a 5 percent discount on their cable bill. Charter also agreed to provide complimentary Internet service to the township’s municipal building and to the New Salem Volunteer Fire Department.
James Corrin Jr., director of government relations for Charter, said most customers should not notice a change because the new agreement is similar to the one that previously existed between the cable company and the township.
In other business, Yatsko said residents are not abiding by the township’s burning ordinance.
“People should only be burning during the day on Saturdays, and we’re getting complaints that people are burning at night or during the week. If we catch someone, they’re going to get fined,” he said.
According to township ordinances, residents are allowed to burn only during the day Saturday until Sept. 30, when they are then allowed to burn Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
In other matters, Yatsko announced that astronaut Robert Cenker, who was born in the township, will make an appearance at the community picnic Aug. 16.
Yatsko said Cenker was one of the last astronauts to make a round trip on space shuttle Columbia before it exploded.
“Residents will be able to meet Bob and get his autograph,” he said. ‘Everyone’s invited to attend.”
The picnic will begin at 2 p.m. and will be held at New Salem Woods, the firemen’s picnic area.
