Carmichaels council sets tax rate to reflect assessment change

CARMICHAELS – During a brief meeting Tuesday, borough council officials said residents will pay a 2.85 millage rate this year. The council was forced to re-evaluate the tax rate it approved earlier in the year after failing to take into account changes resulting from the county’s property reassessment.

Council President Ryan Armstrong said the millage rate that council members had approved earlier was incorrect because the board failed to take into account what the tax rate would be after the reassessment

According to figures released from the office of Greene County Chief Assessor H. John Frazier, the borough’s tax rate, under a revenue-neutral system, would be 2.7 mills, based on the new values established in the reassessment the county completed last year.

“We collected a little over $30,000 in taxes last year,” said Armstrong. “A 2.85-mill rate will allow us to collect a little more than that this year.”

According to Armstrong, the borough should collect about $200 more in taxes this year.

“Property owners will be paying less than a dollar in tax increases,” Armstrong said.

Under the new rate, taxpayers will pay $28.50 for every $10,000 in assessed property value.

In other matters, the council accepted a $4,500 bid from the Cumberland Township Police Department for a 1997 Ford police car.

After reviewing bids for a 1991 Chevrolet police car the council decided to keep the vehicle as a backup. “You never know when you might need two police cars,” said council member John Paletta. “The car is still in good shape. The tires on the car are worth more than some of the bids we received.”

The council decided to put the cars up for sale after Carmichaels Municipal Water Authority gave the borough $20,000 to purchase a 2003 Chevrolet Impala.
