ABATE plans cancer run

By Christine Haines 2 min read

BROWNSVILLE – More than 200 motorcyclists are expected for the Fifth Annual ABATE Cancer Run Saturday. Deborah Goney, the membership officer for the River Valley Chapter of ABATE said the fundraising event is being co-sponsored by the River Valley and Fayette County chapters of ABATE, but all bikers are welcome to participate, whether or not they belong to ABATE.

“All bikers are welcome. Even people who don’t ride will come to the party at the end,” Goney said.

The four-hour motorcycle run will be followed by live entertainment, various fund raising activities, food and vendor booths at White Tavern on Route 51 in Smock. There is no fee to enter the dinner and entertainment.

There is a $10 fee for each rider participating in the Cancer Run, with free patches given to the first 100 registrants. Registration will take place at Pizon’s on Route 51 in Smock between 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., with the ride leaving promptly at noon.

Goney said the ride has grown each year, with $1,000 raised for the American Cancer Society the first year of the run and nearly $5,000 raised last year. Goney said riders are coming from as far as Morgantown, W.Va. to participate in the event for the American Cancer Society. Goney said riders from even further away could show up on Saturday, since she has flyers about the event all across the state.

Goney said the Cancer Run is only one of many community-oriented activities of the local ABATE chapters. The groups provide safety education programs in the schools, do community service work and have made annual donations to the Brownsville Soup Kitchen and Brownsville Free Public Library.
