Brownsville group plans march
BROWNSVILLE – The Brownsville Citizens Against Drugs will march through the streets of the borough Saturday to raise awareness of the drug problem in the community. “Everybody knows there is a drug problem in Brownsville. We want to make the police and the drug task force do their jobs. We want it to be safe for people to sit out on their porches,” said Nena Kaminsky, one of the organizers of the march.
March participants will meet in the parking lot in the center of town and then march down Water Street and Second Street. Kaminsky said the group might stop in front of the borough building for a brief demonstration.
“We would like the mayor and councilmen to join us,” Kaminsky said.
Kaminsky said borough officials and the Brownsville Area Ministerial Association have shown a great deal of concern about the possibility of casino gambling in Brownsville, even though it doesn’t exist yet, while appearing to show little concern for the drug problem that exists. She said she will contact the Brownsville Ministerial Association to invite the area churches to join in the march.
Kaminsky said one local church already has shown a great deal of interest.
“The Brownsville Christian Church had a festival on Saturday, and we signed up a lot of people who were interested,” she said. “Anyone who wants to join us is welcome. Hopefully, we can get the people out.”
Kaminsky said the march is purely for informational and awareness purposes. It is not to target suspected drug dealers.
“We don’t want to be vigilantes. That’s not what we want to do. We just want it to be safe for the kids,” Kaminsky said.
Informational pamphlets on drug awareness will be available at the march site.
