ASBURY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, South Beeson at Dunbar St., Uniontown, on Sunday offers a casual 9 a.m. worship service that features praise choruses and hymns led by the Rev. James Fogg, accompanied by Jim Hutchinson, and Rev. Fogg’s message “The Conversation.’ The children will have a Pentecost party at 9:45 a.m. Sunday school time. The 11 a.m. worship will be a blended service including Rev. Fogg’s message and special music by the Asbury Chancel Choir, directed by Bill Dreucci, organist Jim Hutchinson and Paul and Barb Cramer and Becky Johnson. BROWNSVILLE AREA MINISTERIAL ASSOCIATION COALITION FOR A STABLE LOCAL ECONOMY will host area residents at a forum on the impact of gambling expansion on the local community on Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Sons of Italy Hall on Water Street in Brownsville. The Rev. Tom Grey, a nationally recognized leader on the impact of gambling expansion, will be speaker. Rev. Grey has appeared on PBS’ “Frontline,’ “60 Minutes,’ CNN’s “Crossfire’ as well as has been profiled in numerous articles in U.S. News and World Report and Time. MASONTOWN CROP WALK: Churches in Masontown and the surrounding area will participate in the annual CROP Walk to be held on Sunday. Registration will be at 1 p.m. and the walkers leave the German-Masontown Park at 1:30 p.m.
Participants will walk through the streets of Masontown as a group to raise money and awareness of hunger. Twenty-five percent of the money raised will stay in the community to support the McClellandtown Presbyterian Church Food Pantry and the Masontown Presbyterian Church Food Pantry. Last year, $6,192 was collected and this year’s goal is to top $7,000. All donations will be returned to the church recruiter and the person collecting $50 or more will receive a free t-shirt commemorating the walk.
The CROP Walk is not a race and there is no competition involved. Walkers can complete the walk route at their own pace. The course is designed for the seasoned walker or runner with overlapping sections for those not up to the strenuous challenges of a 5-k race. Walkers can double back to the German-Masontown Park at any time to end their portion of the walk. All walkers will meet at the park for refreshments following the walk. PLEASANT VIEW PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, located two miles west of Smock at the intersection of the Pleasant View and Royal roads, will observe Pentecost Sunday at 10 a.m. worship, which will be held in the church pavilion, weather permitting. This will be an intergenerational worship experience celebrating the gift of the Holy Spirit and the birthday of the Church. It will include kite-making to fly on the wind of the Spirit. The church will sponsor a food booth at Uniontown Chamber of Commerce Rib Cook-off on June 29 from noon to 9:30 p.m. Proceeds will be used to supplement the church’s ministries and mission projects.
ROSCOE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 300 Main St., announces the celebration of Pentecost on Sunday will feature the musical talents of David Olson, Belle Vernon artist and instrumentalist. Olson will introduce and play his newly designed water pipe flute at the church’s informal summer worship service, which begins at 9:15 a.m. with a continental breakfast in the manse, hosted by Charles and Virginia Downes. Olson, who is well known throughout the tri-county area for playing the bag pipes, will play them outside as people gather after breakfast for the 9:45 a.m. informal summer worship service in the sanctuary. In addition, Olson also plays the fiddle, trombone and tin whistle. He is a noted artist and sculptor. In honor of Pentecost, worshippers are encouraged to wear something red, the liturgical color of Pentecost. Worship will include Holy Communion. George McFayden of Bentleyville, retired teacher and organist, will be guest organist. The loose offering will go to the ministry of the deacons. Olson will play bagpipes again as worshippers leave the church.
On Wednesday, June 11, the church will host its annual strawberry festival from noon to 5:30 p.m. in fellowship hall, sponsored by the Janet Ray Circle. Proceeds support missions of the church. On Father’s Day, the church will honor men at the close of the service.
