Golf tournament to benefit scholarship fund
A golf tournament will honor the memory of a popular Laurel Highlands High School student and raise money for a scholarship fund. The tournament will be held at the Springdale Golf Club Saturday on Saturday, June 21, and will benefit the Tylar Andaloro Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Andaloro was 18 and a senior at Laurel Highlands High School when she was killed in a car accident along Route 119 near Smithfield on April 28, 2002.
Lyn Andaloro said she thought of the scholarship as a way to honor the memory of her daughter, while providing opportunities for deserving students to continue their studies.
“Tylar was valedictorian for her class of 2002,” said Andaloro. “The scholarship is academic-based. It is another way of keeping her memory alive. It’s honoring her life. She did such an excellent job that we want to make sure students of the same can excel in their studies.”
Prizes, games and skill contests will be parts of the golf tournament. After the event, a buffet lunch will be available.
“I want to raise enough money so the scholarship perpetuates itself through the years,” said Andaloro. “We would love to raise $4,000 so then the scholarship will grow to be self- perpetuating throughout the years. The community has been very, very supportive in helping us reach this goal.”
Previous scholarship recipients were Jerry Rogers, class of 2002, and Michol Monaghan and Elizabeth Wiltrout, class of 2003.
Only Laurel Highlands seniors with high academic standing will be considered for the scholarship.
“It was amazing to watch Tylar. She made friends with a lot of different groups of people,” said Andaloro. “They would come over to the house, and they still come over. It gives them something to do.”
A Fayette County coroner’s jury recently ruled that the death of Andaloro and her passenger, 17-year-old Carrie Ann Rapano, was an avoidable accident caused by driving at an excessive speed, wet road conditions, poor tires and the girls’ failure to wear seatbelts.
“A lot of people will look at me and say, ‘She’s so sad.’ So, if I look happy and continue to honor her, keeping a positive attitude, it helps not only me but I think it helps others as well. If I appear happy, they are happy also,’ said Andaloro.
