Smithfield seeks money for new park

By Rebekah Sungala 2 min read

SMITHFIELD – The borough council said it is planning to apply for a grant that will pay for a park to be built near the basketball courts on Firehouse Lane. Borough President Jack Frith said he would like to have a playground with a picnic area built.

“It would be nice to have swings and slides for the kids, and picnic tables,” said Frith. “We’d really like to have a pavilion area.”

Frith did not say when construction would begin, adding that the council must first apply for a grant.

Last month, council purchased a new basketball hoop for the courts and plans to buy stencils and paint lines.

Mayor Chuck Cieszynski said people used the basketball courts once the new hoop was installed.

“I saw several youths up there playing,” he said. “It would be nice if we could improve that area even more.”

If the borough receives a grant, council member Kelli Ash said the land would be a nice playground and picnic area.

“It’s very pretty,” she said. “There’s lots of shade.”

The council also conducted the following business:

– Announced that recyclable items will be picked up Monday.

– Warned all residents that they need to separate all storm water from sanitary sewer drains.

– Thanked everyone who participated in the Memorial Day Parade.
