Arlene Marie Cooley Callen

Arlene Marie Cooley Callen, 61, of Anderson, Indiana, died on Saturday, March 1, 2003 in her residence after a battle with colon cancer. She was born May 6, 1941 in Uniontown, Pa., to Donald W. Cooley and Evelyn Jeffreys Cooley.

Arlene graduated as Valedictorian of the Class of 1959 from the former North Union High School in Uniontown, Pa., and received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education in 1963 from Geneva College, Beaver Falls, Pa.

On August 10, 1963 Arlene married Barry L. Callen. The couple resided in the Anderson, Indiana, area throughout most of their marriage.

A longtime member of Park Place Church of God, Arlene’s life was dedicated to Jesus Christ, her beloved Family, a range of Christian causes, and children’s education.

She taught at Chesterfield Elementary School (1963 to 1967), tutored individually, and was active in various children’s ministries.

She was also a Leader and Staff Sponsor for an organization for seminary wives on the Anderson University campus.

Beginning in 1995 she devoted most of her loving energy to her beloved Grandchildren.

Her hobbies included art, cooking, and music.

Survivors include her mother, Evelyn Jeffreys Cooley, her husband of 39 years, Dr. Barry L. Callen; their son, Todd Callen, and daughter-in-law, Beth Hazen Callen, Grandchildren, Ian, Emily and Ethan, and sister-in-law, Bonnie Aley and her children, Cassie and Scott, all of Anderson, Indiana.

Arlene greatly appreciated a series of Christian caregivers during her time of illness including Jean Blocker, Beth Callen, Tracy Collins, Liz Fadely, Bernie Falls, Sylvia Grubbs, Jeannie Huttenlocker, Judy Jackson, Dorothy Nye and Darlene Stafford.

She was preceded in death by her father, Donald Cooley, of Uniontown, Pa.

Visitation will be held at the ROZELLE-JOHNSON FUNERAL SERVICE, A Family Owned Funeral Service Since 1931, 229 South Rangeline Road, Anderson, Indiana 46015 (765+643-7474) on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m.

Visitation will continue on Wednesday, March 5, in Park Place Church of God, Anderson, Indiana, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Judy Hughes and the Rev. David Markle officiating.

Burial will be in East Maplewood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made either to Horizon International of Pendleton (ministering to AIDS orphans in southern Africa), The Christian Center of Anderson, or St. John’s Hospice of Anderson.
