Choir festival set for Sunday

By Frances Borsodi Zajac 2 min read

First United Methodist Church of Brownsville, located at 215 Church St., will host the Third Annual Community Choir Festival on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. The program includes the combined choir from St. Mary and St. Peter Roman Catholic churches in Brownsville, St. Procopius Roman Catholic Church in New Salem, Christian Church of Allison, Calvin United Presbyterian Church of Brownsville, Allison Church of the Nazarene, First Christian Church of Brownsville, C.H.A.N.G.E. of the Brownsville area, a solo by Tyrone Smith of Brownsville and the choir from the Brownsville United Methodist Charge.

“We started the first year with nine different groups or soloists. The next year, two changed, but we still had nine. We have nine again this year,’ said Patsy Wilson of the Brownsville United Methodist Charge.

A new part this year is that at the end of the service, all the choirs will join together to perform “Light Every Voice and Sing.’

Wilson noted the event is popular, playing to a packed church.

“It really caught on quickly and that’s why we’re so excited about it,’ she said. “We’re also competing with the school play. But anyone who wants to go just goes to the school play earlier.’

Wilson said the concert would feature Christian music, including a variety of gospel music and hymns. “There’s no particular style. It’s a combination of styles,’ she commented.

The choir festival also gives the churches a sense of community.

Said Wilson, “There seems to be a need in the church community to get together to sing and praise God.’

Admission to the festival is free but an offering will be taken for a local charity. Refreshments will be served after the concert. For more information, phone 724-785-8704.
