Top-ranked Blue Mountain upset by Steelton-Highspire Tremaine Hawthorne and Dom Allen scored 17 points each to lead Steelton Highspire to a 62-56 upset of top-ranked and unbeaten Blue Mountain in the second round of the PIAA Boys Class AAA playoffs Tuesday at Reading High School.
Steelton-Highspire (21-8), ranked No. 9, jumped out to a 36-27 halftime lead and held on for the victory. Gerard Madden added 14 points for the winners.
Shawn Werdt led Blue Mountain (30-1) with 18 points, while Chris Cable added 13.
No. 2 Blackhawk (27-2), behind the 39-point performance of Ryan Evanochko, recorded a 78-69 victory over No. 7 General McLane (25-4). Blackhawk broke open a two-point game by outscoring General McLane, 24-14, in the third quarter.
Also scoring in double figures for Blackhawk were Joe Powell, 11, and Josh Engle, 10.
In other Class AAA boys second round games, No. 3 Lancaster Catholic (32-0) remained unbeaten with a 61-57 win over No. 8 Allentown Central Catholic (21-9), No. 4 Franklin (23-5) registered a 63-57 win over Moon (20-9), No. 5 Harriton (25-4) posted an 87-64 victory over Wilkes-Barre Meyers (20-9), No. 10 Holy Ghost Prep (26-3) won 48-45 over Northeastern (25-7) , Perry Traditional Academy (21-7) posted a 58-43 win over Keystone Oaks (17-11), and Hopewell (21-10) defeated Sharon (20-8), 52-48.
All winners of Tuesday’s games advance to Friday’s quarterfinals.
In Class A Boys, No. 1 Kennedy Catholic (24-5) earned a berth in the quarterfinals with a 55-49 win over No. 8 Clairton (21-8), while No. 2 Scotland School (22-7) posted a 65-58 victory over Pius X (18-10). Scotland School beat Kennedy Catholic in last year’s title game.
In other Boys Class AA second round games, No. 3 Muncy (26-3) recorded a 63-48 win over Galeton (25-3), No. 4 Bishop O’Reilly (20-9) posted a 69-48 win over No. 10 Nativity BVM (21-6), No. 5 Williams Valley (21-8) was upset 54-48 by Faith Christian (23-5), No. 7 Union (18-10) recorded a 57-44 win over West Middlesex (16-13), No. 8 Clarion (21-8) lost 58-39 to California (21-6), and Duquesne (13-16) beat DuBois Central Catholic (22-7), 73-33.
In Class AAAA girls, No. 2 Oakland Catholic (25-5) scored 44 points in the first half en route to a 64-40 win over Schenley (23-6). Oakland Catholic has been to the state title game the last three years.
Meg Bulger led Oakland Catholic with 21 points, while Brianne O’Rourke added 13 points and 8 assists, and Audrey Tabon tallied 10 points and 8 rebounds.
Schenley was led by Britney Jackson, who scored 20 points to improve her season total to 1,019.
In other Class AAAA girls second round games, No. 3 Council Rock North (26-5) recorded a 44-43 win over Harrisburg (19-10), No. 6 Cheltenham (27-4) posted a 50-32 win over Abington Heights (25-4), No. 7 Mercyhurst Prep rallied from a 27-21 halftime deficit to record a 52-42 victory over District 7’s Hempfield (23-6), No. 8 Downingtown (24-6) registered a 61-31 win over Abington (24-6), No. 10 Pleasant Valley (27-3) lost 45-32 to Mount St. Joseph Academy (25-4), and State College (25-2) posted a 75-62 win over North Allegheny (22-7).
In Class AA girls, No. 4 Washington (24-4) received 15 points from Amber Harris in a 52-37 victory over No. 9 Bishop Guilfoyle (21-9). Washington broke open a close game by outscoring Bishop Guilfoyle, 31-20, in the second half. Angela Greaser led Bishop Guilfoyle with 15 points.
Defending state champion Vincentian (21-7) posted a 44-32 victory over South Side Beaver (20-5). Maria Murdock scored 10 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead Vincentian, while teammate Carolyn Minnock added 10 points. Allyson Clarke led South Side Beaver with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
In other Class AA girls second round games, No. 2 Girard (24-5) scored a 55-32 victory over No. 3 Carlynton (22-8), No. 6 Delone Catholic (27-5) recorded a 44-37 win over Saint Pius X (17-11), No. 7 Steelton-Highspire (26-4) posted a 71-45 victory over Wyomissing (23-7), Wilkes-Barre Meyers (27-3) posted a 60-50 win over Southern Columbia (21-8), Catasauqua (26-5) registered a 46-30 win over Montrose (20-10), and North East (20-9) defeated Richland (21-8), 61-47.
