Uniontown man faces assault charges

By Jackie Beranek 2 min read

A Uniontown man faces seven charges of aggravated assault, simple assault and terroristic threats after police said he allegedly beat his girlfriend with a brick and assaulted two state police troopers. State police at Uniontown charged Elijah D. Crosby, 39, of 33 Forbes Street, Apartment C, with three counts each of aggravated assault and simple assault and one count of terroristic threats after the late Sunday afternoon incident.

Crosby was arraigned before District Justice Robert Breakiron of Bullskin Township and sent to the Fayette County Prison in lieu of an unspecified bail.

He will face District Justice Deberah Kula of Uniontown at a preliminary hearing on March 20 at 1:30 p.m.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed in Kula’s office, Crosby allegedly became involved in a domestic disturbance with Leona Matheny, 31, of the same address. Police said during the incident Crosby allegedly punched Matheny in the face and then pulled her from the residence by her hair, tearing her shirt in the process.

Police said once outside Crosby allegedly punched Matheny three or four more times in the face and head and allegedly picked up a brick and struck her on the back of the head, on her face and on the right shoulder.

“He was yelling that he was going to ‘smash your brains in with this brick’ and told her ‘you are gonna die tonight,”‘ police said.

Troopers Matthew Hartman and Russell Freed said when they arrived at the scene Crosby remained combative.

“When approached, he continued to hold her around the neck with one arm, and kept holding the brick above his head like he was going to strike her again,” police said. “He refused to drop the brick after several commands to do so.”

Police said during that time Crosby was holding onto Matheny and dragging her backwards toward their residence.

“Eventually, he dropped the brick onto the porch and attempted to go through the front door of the residence,” said police.

Police said when they attempted to arrest Crosby he punched Hartman in the nose and continued to struggle and kicked Freed in the chest several times.

Police said Crosby was eventually subdued and taken into custody.
