Coatesville upsets Harrisburg Sky Williams scored 23 points to lead Coatesville to an 81-75 upset win over defending champion Harrisburg Wednesday in the PIAA Class AAAA boys playoffs.
Coatesville (22-9), ranked No. 9 in the state, outscored top-ranked Harrisburg (26-4), 32-23, in the final quarter to overcome a 3-point deficit.
Also in boys Class AAAA, No. 2 Chester (25-6) survived a big scare as it needed two overtimes to defeat Hatboro-Horsham (23-7), 64-58.
Three ranked boys Class AAAA teams were upset. No. 5 Council Rock North (20-11) dropped a 72-59 decision to Red Land (25-5), No. 7 Lancaster McCaskey (25-7) lost 68-64 to Glen Mills (24-6), and No. 8 Penn Hills (25-5) lost 34-30 to Chartiers Valley (18-10).
In other boys Class AAAA second round games, No. 4 Altoona (24-4) posted a 47-38 win over Taylor Allderdice (14-13), No. 10 Upper Saint Clair (27-3) recorded a 63-61 win over Oliver (22-5), and State College (21-6) registered a 46-42 win over Plum (22-5).
All second round winners advance to Saturday’s quarterfinal round.
In boys Class AA, Brian Michael Dungee scored 22 points to lead Farrell (19-9) to a 63-44 upset of previously unbeaten and No. 2 ranked Keystone (27-1).
Farrell outscored Keystone 35-15 in the first half, including an 18-5 advantage in the second quarter. Greg Smith added 12 points and 11 rebounds for unranked Farrell. Garrett Heath scored 24 points to lead Keystone.
No. 4 Loyalsock (23-5) was also upset, as it dropped a 58-49 decision to unranked Pine Grove (22-9).
Davon Huger scored 26 points, including 16 in the second half, to lead No. 10 Sto-Rox (24-6) to a 58-48 victory over Neshannock (20-7).
Sto-Rox, last year’s state runner-up, held Neshannock to 15 points in the first half. Adam DiMichele added 15 points for Sto-Rox. Bob Preston and Bobby Glass led Neshannock with 12 points each.
In other boys Class AA games, top ranked Camp Hill Trinity (30-0) remained unbeaten with a 74-34 win over Delone Catholic (14-15) , No. 3 Aliquippa (25-5) pulled out an 82-79 win over Beaver Falls (20-6), No. 7 Reading Central Catholic (27-4) posted a 51-39 win over No. 8 Notre Dame-Green Pond (20-8), York Catholic (19-10) recorded a 54-41 win over Wyalusing (18-11), and Wilkinsburg (23-6) defeated North Star (23-5), 41-27.
In Class AAA Girls, No. 3 North Catholic (22-6) outscored Blackhawk (20-7) 11-2 in the fourth quarter en route to a 51-41 second round victory.
Sarah Miller led North Catholic with 13 points, while Sara Prybyl added 12 and Rachel Frederick contributed 10. Renee Rawding led Blackhawk with 14 points.
In a girls Class AAA game that involved two ranked teams, No. 5 Moon (20-9) pulled out a 39-34 win over No. 7 Corry (24-5). Nia Capuano led Moon with 16 points, while Megan Sampsell led Corry with 12.
In other girls Class AAA second round games, defending champion and top-ranked Allentown Central Catholic (29-1) rolled to an easy 60-36 win over Lancaster Catholic (24-7), No. 4 Villa Maria (23-6) posted a 60-51 victory over Johnstown (21-7), No. 6 Lewistown (23-6) recorded a 77-51 win over Westinghouse (18-10), No. 9 Saint Basil (20-9) dropped a 38-35 decision to North Pocono (27-4), No. 10 Villa Maria Academy (24-3) was upset 54-48 by Bishop Hoban (26-3), and Nazareth Academy (21-8) pulled out a 54-52 overtime win over Dallas (23-6).
In girls Class A, two games involved ranked teams.
No. 3 Lebanon Catholic (22-6) recorded a 40-36 win over No. 5 Nativity BVM (26-4), while No. 8 Monessen (25-4) registered a 56-53 victory over No. 10 Kennedy Catholic (24-6).
Charel Allen led Monessen with 28 points, while Perriel Pearson added 16. Becca Gasiewicz led Kennedy Catholic with 20 points and Leah Mastrian had 15.
Also in girls Class A, Michelle Manfredi scored 28 points to lead No. 2 Serra Catholic (24-2) to a 70-48 victory over Rimersburg Union (23-5). Brittany Matta added 14 points for Serra. Rachel Eaton led Rimersburg Union with 17 points, while Amy Mortimer added 15.
In other girls Class A second round games, defending champion and top-ranked Bishop Carroll (28-2) recorded a 71-39 victory over Cameron County (22-8), No. 4 Cardinal Brennan (26-5) registered a 46-38 win over Antietam (20-7), No. 6 Marian Catholic (25-5) posted a 50-43 win over Forest City (23-6), No. 7 Greenwood (22-7) registered a 69-59 victory over Lourdes Regional (22-7), and No. 9 Sewickley Academy (24-5) lost 59-38 to Coudersport (27-1).
