Man charged with injuring officer released from jail
CONNELLSVILLE – A city man charged with injuring a Connellsville police officer over the weekend was released from jail on Monday. Jonathan Bailey, 24, of 335 E. Crawford Ave. was remanded to Fayette County Prison on Saturday after an arraignment hearing before District Justice Ronald Haggerty on various assault and drug charges lodged against him by Connellsville Police in connection with the incident.
Liberty Bail Bond posted the $50,000 straight cash bond, imposed by Haggerty during the hearing, with the magisterial office that allowed for Bailey’s release.
Connellsville police Chief Stephen Cooper said Tuesday that Patrolman Steven Shaffer was treated at Highlands Hospital for injuries to his back, head and legs. He is expected to return to regular duty at the end of the week.
According to the police report, Shaffer and two other officers responded to a domestic call at a 335 E. Crawford Ave. residence where Lisa Galipeau informed them that the couple had an argument concerning a large amount of drugs Bailey had brought into the home.
Before their arrival, said police, Bailey left the residence on foot.
When located on East Apple Street, Bailey refused to comply with Shaffer’s orders to stop and proceeded to run from the scene. Shaffer apprehended Bailey, but was kicked numerous times before a second officer took Bailey into custody, according to police.
After the scuffle, Bailey was allegedly found to be in possession of 91 grams of cocaine, 3 grams of crack cocaine and a small amount of marijuana along with a digital scale and $1,392.
Bailey was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, resisting arrest, drug possession, drug possession with intent to deliver, possession of drug paraphernalia, disorderly conduct and criminal mischief.
A preliminary hearing set for today will be rescheduled.
