California council votes down transfer
CALIFORNIA – At Thursday’s California Borough Council meeting the board discussed recent changes in Liquor Control Board requirements that would allow business owners with a liquor license to request a transfer to another municipality within the county. Solicitor Keith Melenyzer said that local business owners Michael Grimes and Ron Wright had made such a request.
“They had made a request to conduct business at 240 Third Street,” said Melenyzer.
“There has to be a public hearing when someone wants a municipality transfer so that people can give their input, whether they approve or disapprove of the location the business wants to come to.”
He said there had already been a hearing about this transfer, and it was up to the board to approve it.
“Most of us were in attendance at that hearing and had a lot of questions at that time,” said Councilman John Greenlief.
“There was a large contingency from members of the church that is directly across from that location.
Many of them objected to that location being used to sell six packs, and I can understand that. So I object.”
The board voted on his motion to disapprove the transfer and the motion carried.
The board also voted to have Melenyzer prepare a driveway ordinance that would regulate driveways entering the roads throughout the borough being built in.
“This ordinance is to regulate cutting in new driveways,” said Melenyzer, “For instance, if someone had to cut a curb to put in their driveway, this will ensure that everything is done properly and make sure that the streets are not damaged.”
In other matters, Mayor Gerald Gardner announced that he wanted to recognize a large group of students from California University who aided the borough during the major snowstorm this winter.
“These young men shoveled snow throughout the borough and even got out of their cars when they saw someone else shoveling snow so they could help. I want to present them with a certificate of appreciation for making this a safer community.”
