March 23, 2003 Work to resume
MENALLEN TWP. – Motorists on a section of Route 40 will notice sign placement and preparation work starting this week, as crews prepare for construction that will resume on the road next week, weather permitting.
The work, which started last year, will resume between Fan Hollow Road and Dearth Road, and flaggers will maintain traffic during construction.
The project, scheduled for completion in mid-July, includes drainage upgrades, milling, repaving, paved shoulders, upgrades to guardrail and signing, seeding, mulching and line painting.
Golden Eagle Construction Co. of Uniontown will complete the $1.19 million project.
Motorists are reminded about the new work-zone safety laws. Use of headlights while traveling through a marked work zone is mandatory, and those caught speeding 11 mph over the work zone speed limit face an automatic 15-day license suspension.
PennDOT workers now have a police arrest form, which allows them to take information on drivers who violate work zone laws. This information can result in the driver receiving a citation.
Registration scheduled
Brownsville Area School District will hold kindergarten registration for the 2003-2004 school year April 7-10 at the district’s administrative offices in the Hiller Elementary School from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., according to the following schedule: students with last names beginning with letters A-E, Monday, April 7; F-K, Tuesday, April 8; L-Q, Wednesday, April 9; and R-Z, Thursday, April 10.
A child is eligible for admission to kindergarten if he/she is 5 years old before Sept. 1.
Written verification of the child’s age (birth certificate), Social Security number, immunization record and proof of residency are requested at the time of registration. State law requires that parents present evidence that their child has been given a minimum of the following immunizations: four doses of diphtheria and tetanus, with one dose administered on or after the fourth birthday; three doses of hepatitis B vaccine; three doses of polio vaccine; and two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine, with the first given at 12 months of age or older. Also, one dose of varivax (chicken pox) vaccine or written verification of chickenpox disease are required before the 2003-2004 school year.
Kindergarten registrants will be administered the ABC Pre-School Inventory and vision and speech screenings. The child must be present.
The school board may, on the written request of a parent of guardian, admit to kindergarten a child younger than 5 who is recommended by the Early Admission Review Committee and approved by the superintendent. The parent/guardian, at their own expense, must have their child evaluated by a certified public school psychologist who has been approved in advance by the district. The Early Admissions Review Committee will evaluate the results of this test, along with the pre-school inventory, administered by the district’s counselor. Before taking any action toward early entrance, parents must call the superintendent’s office at 724-785-2021 ext. 109.
