William M. Long
William M. Long, 78, of Carmichaels, Pa., died at 8:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at his home after a brief illness. He was a lifelong resident of the Carmichaels area, and was the son of the late Reed M. and Edna Moredock Long.
Mr. Long was a 1942 graduate of Cumberland Township High School and was employed as assistant supervisor of supplies for 18 ½ years at the former Crucible Fuel Company Mine, until the mine closed in 1960. After obtaining his insurance and real estate licenses, he worked as an agent for the Nationwide Insurance Company for 43 years, retiring in 1991. Mr. Long was a member of the Fayette Chapter and the National Association Life Insurance Underwriters, a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, and a member of the B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 757 of Waynesburg, Pa. Mr. Long also served as Neighborhood Commissioner for the Boy Scouts of America.
Mr. Long was always interested in the community and was very active in the affairs of Carmichaels and Greene County.
Mr. Long was past president and vice-president of the Carmichaels Area School Board of Education, where he served for 14 years. In addition, he served as president of the Carmichaels Area Chamber of Commerce, was a past chairman and coordinator of the Greene County Emergency Services Institute, and a Para-medical Coordinator of Emergency Medical Technician training in Greene County. Mr. Long was a Pennsylvania Department of Health Certified Emergency Medical Technician, Instructor and Evaluator. He was one of the first Emergency Medical Technicians in Greene County, and initiated the first E. M. T. courses in Greene County. Mr. Long was the first director of the Greene County Emergency Management Agency, and was instrumental in the establishment of the current 911 system in Greene County.
Mr. Long was a member of the Carmichaels and Cumberland Township Volunteer Fire Company, since June 15, 1951, and held the offices of secretary, treasurer, lieutenant, captain and assistant chief. He also served with the King Coal Association, where he held the offices of president, director, treasurer and parade marshal.
Mr. Long served as treasurer and secretary of the Greene County Firemen’s Association, as Greene County Fire Marshal and as the Assistant Fire Marshal to the Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal.
Mr. Long was a member of the Western Pennsylvania Firemen’s Association for over 50 years, and a past president of the Old Timers of the Western Pennsylvania Firemen’s Association. He was also a member of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Chiefs and assistant Chiefs Association, and a C. P. R. Instructor for the American Heart Association.
His wife, Betty June Markulic Long, whom he married on Aug. 4, 1951, survives. Also surviving are two sons, Michael R. Long and his wife, Herbie of Carmichaels, and Marc L. Long and his fiancé, Kelly A. Cook of Gaithersburg, Md.; a daughter, Patti J. Fancher and her husband, Toby of Waynesburg, Pa.; four grandchildren, Ibra S. (Drew)Fancher IV, Sean Michael Fancher, Reed Douglas Long and Erin MacKenzie Long; two brothers, Robert E. Long and his wife, Betty of Carmichaels, and Louis R. Long and his wife, Ellen of Rices Landing, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Sonja Long; a son, Col. Gary Wayne Long; a brother, Paul Moredock Long; and a sister, Elma Kantorick.
Friends will be received in the YOSKOVICH FUNERAL HOME, Martin J. Yoskovich, Funeral Director, 300 South Vine St., (Route 88), Carmichaels, Pa., from 7 to 9 p.m., today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., on Friday. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday at a time to be announced. The Carmichaels and Cumberland Township Volunteer Fire Company will conduct a memorial service at 7 p.m., on Friday in the funeral home.
