Legion outlines Americanism Day plans
A full lineup of guests has been scheduled for American Legion Post 51’s annual Americanism Day celebration, featuring a special salute to those now in the armed forces. “We want to especially remember all of those men and women who are overseas today,” said Joseph T. Joseph, the post’s adjutant. He noted a special book is being prepared to commemorate the event, which bears the slogan “Window to the Community.” The book will include articles on how Americanism Day got started in Uniontown and the origin of the American flag.
Joseph said special guests would include Gerald “Jerry” Zorn, Pennsylvania American Legion commander; Terry Lewis, past national vice commander; state Sen. Richard Kasunic (D-Dunbar) who was recently appointed chairman of the Pennsylvania Department of Veterans Affairs, and Uniontown Mayor James Sileo.
Joseph said American Legion members plan to line the streets of Uniontown with 850 American flags and 40 MIA/POW (Missing In Action/Prisoner Of War) flags.
Joseph said although he is chairman of the event, Ronald E. Danko, the post’s commander, is coordinating Americanism Day.
Joseph said all veterans’ organizations in the area can participate in the program book, and he reminded everyone that the cutoff date for advertising is April 15.
“People can put a saying in the book like, ‘Pray for our son or grandson’ or whomever they have in the Persian Gulf or in any of the other 32 countries around the world where American soldiers are deployed,” he said.
The book will have no political announcements.
“This is not a political rally,” said Joseph. “It is strictly a veterans’ affair. Since this came up about our boys being deployed, there’s just not enough that we can do for them.
“We want everyone far and wide to see that Uniontown is a city of tradition and strength during good times and bad times,’ said Joseph.
By tying a yellow ribbon around a tree, pole or post or by placing it on their lapels, residents are showing the world that they want to see the safe return of the nation’s troops, Joseph said.
He added that he wants to remind Americanism Day parade-goers to wear yellow ribbons that day. He said anyone who doesn’t have one should call him at the American Legion at 724-438-8041.
