$1,000 reward offered by anonymous businessman in vandalism spree

CONNELLSVILLE – A local businessman has offered a hefty reward to aid police in the apprehension of the person or persons vandalizing automobiles on the city’s South Side. Chief Stephen Cooper said the benefactor, who does not want to be identified, will pay $1,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the vandal.

“Hopefully, the substantial amount of money will encourage someone to come forward,” Cooper said Friday.

The rash of vandalism reportedly began late Wednesday, and residents contacted the city police department the next morning to report the tires on their automobiles had been punctured.

The calls continued through Thursday, and by mid-afternoon Friday, the morning shift already had received several reports from victims, said Cooper.

The unidentified businessman became aware of the multiple incidents, said Cooper, and contacted the police department to offer his financial assistance.

Cooper said the incidents took place within the 1000 and 1100 blocks of Vine Street, 1100 block of Sycamore Street, 200 block of East Patterson Avenue, 700 block of East Cedar Avenue and 700 block of South Pittsburgh Street. Police estimated the damage at $1,800.

Anyone with information should police at 724-628-2501, extension 110.

Cooper said all information will be kept in strict confidence.
