Cross country news

Mount Summit Challenge was held on Sunday, April 27. The day dawned crisp and sunny, a perfect day for a race, as a number of brave and hardy souls ventured forth to conquer the Mount Summit Challenge, a 3.5-mile vertical ascent along Route 40 from Hopwood to the Mount Summit Inn. The Frazier cross country team had the largest single group of community participants, consisting of team members, family and friends, to make it to the top.

Freshman Kenny Miller once again distinguished himself by placing 12th overall in a field of more than 500 runners and walkers. Rebecca Leary, Erin Sizemore and Heather Priester placed 2nd, 3rd and 4th, respectively, in a very competitive age group. Other fine showings were displayed by senior Gene Zias and 7th-grader Derek Miller.

The team was represented by a range of ages and talent, from the youngest, Ryan Leary, to the oldest, coach Joe Turek. Parents and friends that completed the challenge included Angie Hudik (1st age group), Joanne Leary (2nd age group) and Anne Peters (3rd age group), as well as Alan Sendek, Amy Connors, Lisa Lynch, Anita Holt and David and Carl Burkhart.

As one of the most difficult races of the season, all participants are to be congratulated on their accomplishment.

The Born to Run race for students in grades kindergarten through 8th will be held May 24. Applications will be sent home with all students and will be available at Frazier Middle School, Perry Elementary and Central Elementary schools.

Moose Golf

The Bull Moose Buddy Petrosky, leader of the Club, recently made an observation that the members of the club spend time and money on perfecting their drives when they should developed their short game. It is said that the average golfer will shoot a score of 100 or more, so if you use your driver 18 times in a round, and if you deduct 18 from your total score it will leave you with 82 strokes.

Assuming that you bogey all the holes, you have 32 mid-iron strokes that you have to master in order to improve your game, Mike Vinsick and Jeff Bartonis, took umbrage to that statement, stating that they owe their standings to their drivers. When their standings were checked, it might do them some good to heed the advice given by the king of the hackers.

Cactus Golf

The golf guru and the soon-to-turn-pro Ted Lytle, came by and left this report on the progress of the league. It had been raining most of the morning, and it did not look like there was going to be any golfing, much to the delight of the house Frau, (King Kong in panty hose).

With pencil poised to make out a do list, it looked like he was doomed. In desperation he picked up the phone, hoping against hope that the golf god was going to let them out on the course. Much to his surprise, the golf Pro Cheech Franczac said all systems were go. As usual, at the first tee, the men were lined up anxious to tee off, wanting to get as many holes in before it might rain. It would appear that golfers have a penchant for suffering, the way they moan and groan about their last game and the effect it had on their handicap. The Guru asked Mike Eutsey and Ward Mosser why they continue to play if it was so agonizing. They said in unison, it is better than mowing the lawn or washing windows.
