Newest humane society cuts ribbon on new home
In honor of the one-year anniversary of the incorporation of Noah’s Ark of Fayette County Humane & Animal Protection Society, an open house was held Thursday to showcase the society’s new home. A ribbon cutting and speeches as well as adorable puppies and kittens highlighted the day’s events.
On May 15, 2002, the county’s newest humane society began providing animal control services for numerous municipalities within the county. Since that time, the humane society has continued to expand services. According to shelter manager Tracy Dillinger, the society currently provides animal control services for 29 municipalities in Fayette County; three in Washington County and will soon branch into neighboring Greene County.
Last week, the shelter moved into its current home, located on North Gallatin Avenue across the street from Dollar General in North Union Township. Renovations are under way at the shelter, which will double the current capacity. Dillinger said there will be 35 rooms for animals when renovations are complete.
Dillinger said there were a number of adoptions on Thursday, but about 30 cats and more than 20 dogs remain. In addition to canines and felines, the shelter also handles exotic animals.
The organization was founded by Robin Moore, a former employee of the Fayette Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), when the SPCA encountered financial difficulties due to a lawsuit judgment.
Closed on Sunday, the shelter is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. every other day, except Wednesday when the hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
