State police said 12 people were killed in traffic accidents on state highways during the four-day Memorial Day weekend. In addition to the fatalities, 272 people were injured in the 706 crashes to which state police responded, State Police Commissioner Col. Jeffrey B. Miller said. Miller said nine of those killed were not wearing seat belts, and 85 of the 706 crashes were alcohol-related, including four of the 11 fatal crashes. During the May 23-26 holiday period, state police issued 4,622 speeding citations; charged 230 people with driving under the influence; cited 280 people for not wearing seat belts and cited 36 people for not securing children in safety seats. Last year, 20 people were killed and 327 others were injured in 724 crashes during the Memorial Day weekend. State police said these statistics do not include information from other law enforcement agencies in the state.
