Reward being offered for data on people shooting in Fayette County
State police at Uniontown are partnering with a Fayette County agency in hopes of locating the person or persons who are firing gunshots at local homes, businesses and vehicles. Fayette County Crime Stoppers and local authorities are seeking information in connection with three weekend shooting sprees that have taken place in Dunbar Borough and Dunbar, Franklin and Luzerne townships.
State police at Belle Vernon oversee the Franklin and Luzerne township areas, where four incidents were reported over the Memorial Day weekend.
“We’re hoping that a reward will draw out the person that knows who is doing this,” said state police Trooper Scott Krofcheck on Wednesday.
To date, no one has been injured, said Krofcheck, but numerous windows have been broken and several vehicles have been damaged during the estimated dozen incidents that began May 9 in Dunbar Borough.
Krofcheck said it appears that shootings, which take place during the late night or early morning hours, are being done from a passing car as they travel through the various communities.
“The shootings seem to be very random,” he said, noting that a substantial description of the vehicle has not been determined.
State police trooper Brian Burden, coordinating officer for Crime Stoppers, said the agency is offering a reward up to $1,000 to the person that turns over the significant information that leads to the arrest of the person or persons involved in the random shootings.
Burden said those calling with information do not have to divulge their names to be eligible for the reward.
A number will be given to each caller and after the crime is solved, a panel, composed of state police, civilians and other agencies, determines the reward amount.
Arrangements are then made with the person that provided the information to receive the cash payment.
Anyone with information can call Krofcheck or Trooper George Mrosko at the Uniontown station at 724-439-7111 or Crime Stoppers at 724-437-TIPS (8477) or at its toll-free number, 877-834-TIPS (8477).
