Nov. 2, 2003 Conferences scheduled

The Laurel Highlands School District has announced parent-teacher conferences for all of its schools.

At Laurel Highlands Senior High School, conferences will be held Nov. 12 and 13 from 12:15 to 2:15 p.m. At the middle school, conferences will be held Nov. 12 and 13 from 11:15 a.m. to 3 p.m.

No appointment is necessary at the middle and senior high schools.

At all elementary schools, conferences will be held Nov. 12-14 at pre-scheduled appointment times.

All parents are encouraged to attend these conferences. Those with questions should contact the school their children attend.

Meeting planned

Albert Gallatin Area High School has arranged a meeting for all parents of students in grades nine through 11 to discuss graduation requirements on proficiency in reading, writing and math.

An informational meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium. The purpose of the meeting is to address the graduation requirements as set by the state Department of Education. The process used by the Albert Gallatin Area School District to prove proficiency will be discussed.

A meeting was held Oct. 27 for parents of seniors. Any senior parent who was unable to attend that meeting is invited to attend Wednesday’s session.

Information available

Westmoreland County Community College will hold an information session for those considering attending college Nov. 8 from 9 a.m. to noon in the Founders Hall amphitheater at the college’s Youngwood campus.

The session will provide information on WCCC’s programs of study, financial aid, career counseling, career placement services, opportunities for transfer and student activities. Campus tours will also be available during the open house.

WCCC spring credit classes and online classes begin Jan. 4. For more information or to register, call 800-262-2103.

Open house set

The Mon Valley Career & Technology Center in Charleroi will hold an open house Nov. 13 from 6 to 9 p.m. The public is invited to attend. Educators who visit the open house will receive two hours of Act 48 credit.

Grant approved

State Rep. Peter J. Daley (D-California) has announced the approval of a $19,160 grant to the Fayette County Agricultural Improvement Association.

“As the state’s top industry, agriculture plays a major role in Pennsylvania’s economy by offering capital improvement money, the state ensures that local fairs can properly maintain their facilities and provide a pleasing experience for all fair attendees for years to come,” said Daley, Democratic chairman of the House Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee.

The money reimburses the association for costs incurred to replace the roof surfaces on four buildings at the Fayette County Fairgrounds.

The funding was provided by the Department of Agriculture through the Pennsylvania Agricultural Fair program.

Task force to meet

The Southwestern Local Task Force will meet Thursday at 10 a.m. at Intermediate Unit 1, Coal Center.

All parents of children with disabilities are encouraged to attend, as well as personnel from agencies in Washington, Fayette and Greene counties. For more information, call 800-328-6481, extension 265. The speaker for the meeting will be Marlene Kubina, addressing assistive technology devices.

NAACP plans meeting

The Fayette County NAACP will hold its general meeting Monday, Nov. 10, in the conference room at 137 N. Beeson Ave., Uniontown, across from the main Community Action Building, starting at 7 p.m. For more information, call 724-430-0771.
