John Saxon Sr., 77, of Malden, Brownville, Pa., died Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 2003 in the Brownsville Hospital following a lengthy illness.

He was born April 21, 1926 in Richeyville, Pa., son of Alex Saxon and Margaret Basey Bartowick Saxon.

John was a Veteran of World War II who served in the United States Marine Corps from 1944 to 1946 as a Private First Class. He served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre as an Amphibious Tractor Crewman and participated in the action against hostile forces in Okinawa.

Mr. Saxon had been employed by Bethlehem Mining Corporation’s Mine 58 in Marianna starting in 1946. During his career he had various jobs within the mine before becoming Head Mine Foreman in 1961. He later became Assistant Mine Superintendent and then Superintendent, the position from which he retired in 1980 after 34 years of service.

He was a member of Hancock-McCune-Horne American Legion Post 705 in Centerville, Pa., United Mine Workers of America, and St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Daisytown, Pa.

On June 7, 1947 he married Albina Polidori Saxon, who survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Christina Gabonay of New Salem, Pa.; two sons: John Saxon Jr. of Malden, Pa., and Alex Saxon of Longwood, Florida; five sisters: Betty Selestow of Fredericktown, Pa., Muncie Sakach of Ohio, Jeannie Martin of Florida, Mary Peteritis of Ohio, Irene Keatly of Ohio; three brothers: Steve Bartowick and Tom Bartowick both of Florida, and Frank Laboda of Low Hill, Pa.; seven grandchildren: Laurel Terhorst, Erika Gabonay, William Gabonay, John E. Saxon, Bryan Saxon, Jillian Saxon and Valerie Saxon; two great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received in the JOHN B. GREENLEE FUNERAL HOME, 2830 Main Street, Beallsville, Pa., today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. where Prayers will be said Monday, December 1, at 9:15 a.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial follows at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Daisytown, with Rev. Fr. Francis A. Jurewicz as Celebrant.

Interment will follow in LaFayette Memorial Park, Brier Hill, Pa., where Full Military Rites will be accorded by Hancock-McCune-Horne American Legion Post 705, Centerville.

Visitation was also held Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m.
