John D. Bontrager, 71, of California, Pa., died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003. He was born Oct. 12, 1931, in Iowa City, Iowa, a son of the late Ora Ray and Marie (Palmer) Bontrager.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one grandson, Jordan Shope in March, 2003.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 45 years, Alice (Barclay) Bontrager; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lori and Joseph Slavic of Fredericktown, Pa., and Kim and Robert Shope of Loysburg, Pa.; his son and daughter-in-law, Jon and Faitha Bontrager of Confluence, Pa.; one brother, Carl Bontrager of Markleysburg, Pa.; and six grandchildren, Morgan Slavik, Joe Michael Slavik, Skylar Shope and Marie, Tyler and Sarah Bontrager.

Friends will be received in the United Methodist Church of California on Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, from 2 to 3 p.m., for a memorial service, with the Rev. Chis Decisou officiating.
