Menallen supervisors review sewer system letter

By Amanda Clegg 2 min read

MENALLEN TWP. – During a brief regular meeting Thursday, Supervisor Joe Petrucci announced that a mistake was made on letters about the amount of time Smock Hill residents have to tap in to the new sewer system. The letters, dated Sept. 12, stated that residents must tap in within 30 days of the letter date, but Petrucci said residents must tap in within 30 days from the date they receive the letter.

Fifty-six property owners received letters.

“If someone can’t hook up, then they need to talk to us and we’ll work with them,” Petrucci said.

Billing will begin in November, regardless of whether a resident has tapped in to the system, he added.

In related business, Petrucci said work on the Menallen sewer project’s Contract Three, the Dunlap Dam area, should begin in November.

Supervisor John Yantko said other restoration work needs to move forward before Contract Three.

Although the township sewage authority is responsible for the work progress, the supervisors agreed to look into the matter.

Petrucci also announced that the application for the Jennings Run project has been submitted.

“That’s in the works,” he said.

In other matters, Yantko announced that a newly installed traffic light on Route 51 is in operation and after a 50-day trial period will become the township’s responsibility. The traffic light comes with a 180-day warranty, he added.

The supervisors also conducted the following business:

– Agreed to find out the rates on a contract renewal with Noah’s Ark Humane Society for 2004-2005.

– Announced a paving project will begin in the next few weeks for Constantine Road, Rutter Lane and Waltersburg Hill.

– Agreed to advertise Third Street demolition properties for sale and set a minimum bid price.

– Announced that the third week in October is cleanup week. Chairman Robert Yatsko said residents should put items out for pick-up on their regular garbage day. Tires and batteries will not be accepted.

– Warned of solicitors knocking on doors in the area.

“People should watch. If you’re suspicious, call the township,” Yatsko said, adding that those soliciting must obtain a permit from the township, and if they do not have the permit, residents should not open their doors.

– Announced that burning days are Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

– Agreed to help PennDOT clean a ditch on New Salem Road.
