Rolland W. Herring
Rolland W. Herring, 78, of Chalk Hill, Pa., passed away Tuesday, September 30, 2003, in Highlands Hospital. He was born July 20, 1925, in Farmington, Pa., son of the late Alonzo and Marie Spaw Herring.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Darwin Herring.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Nancy Adeline Lee Herring; his children, David L. Herring of Chalk Hill, Connie J. Herring of Uniontown, Richard A. Herring and wife, Deborah of Granger, Ind., and Susan L. Holly and husband, Tom of Bettles Field, Alaska; six grandchildren, Thomas V. Samuel II and wife, Julie of Mechanicsburg, Pa., Colleen J. Nelson and husband, J.R. of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Shawn E. Herring of Indianapolis, Ind., Aimee B. Herring of Dayton, Ohio, Ashley Herring of Indianapolis, Ind., and Amber Herring of Granger, Ind.; granddog, Eddie of Bettles Field, Alaska.; four great-grandchildren, Jacob and Sarah Nelson and Lance and Leah Samuel; one brother, Harold Bailey Herring and wife, Sheila of Farmington; two sisters, Lorna Acklin of Cleveland, Ohio, and Judy VanBremen and husband, Gary of Farmington; and a sister-in-law, Patsy Herring of Farmington.
Rolland was a member of Farmington Bethel Church of the Brethren and Laurel Lodge F&AM of Uniontown. He was a businessman and Educator, the owner of Herrings Garden Center in Uniontown and Chalk Hill. He was a graduate of Penn State University in 1951, with a B.S. degree in Education and later received his Masters degree in agriculture, was a teacher of Vocational Agriculture at Frazier High School in Perryopolis, for 27 years and retired in 1977. He was involved in the Fayette County Fair as secretary of the Board since its inception.
He was a veteran of World War II as a member of the 610th Tank Destroyer Battalion.
Friends will be received in the DONALD R. CRAWFORD FUNERAL HOME, FARMINGTON, today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and Saturday, in Farmington Bethel Church of the Brethren from 1 to 2 p.m., the hour of the service, with the Rev. Larry Walker and the Rev. A. Harrison Smith officiating. Interment will be in the Church Cemetery.
