Group rallies in Uniontown against abortion
A dozen men and women stood on the sidewalks around the Five Corners intersection Tuesday in Uniontown, holding graphic signs of aborted fetuses. Bob Newman of Pittsburgh leads the loose-knit group of people called Face the Truth America. He said the group came to Fayette County to educate and to show people “what the truth of abortion is.”
Newman, who held a sign as tall as he was with a fetus aborted in the second trimester of pregnancy, said he was hopeful that such a realistic view would open up the eyes of those who think that abortion is only about tissue. The picture of the 21-week-old fetus showed a formed face and fingers and toes.
Another activist held a sign on a 10-week-old aborted fetus that showed formed fingers and toes in a mass of bloody tissue.
While such signs are starling to the senses, Newman makes no apologies for the graphic detail.
“This is upsetting, but it’s the truth,” he said.
Although the group is based in Pittsburgh, Newman said members travel all around Pennsylvania.
In some places, the welcomes are warmer than in others, he said.
Here, Newman said, he believes about 70 percent of the response to their presence has been positive. During an interview, one man less than thrilled with the group’s presence rolled down the window to his truck and shouted an obscenity.
Newman was unfazed.
“The pro-aborts can’t say a sentence without the ‘f’ word,” he said quietly, shaking his head and noting that he does not strive to judge people but to educate.
Stephen Daniel from Dilliner was one of the few local people to join the group from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Daniel said he came out after getting involved through a scripture class.
“As long as abortions are legal, there’s going to be people like me doing this,” he said.
