Contest launched State Treasurer Barbara Hafer and Jude Driscoll, CEO of Delaware Investments of Philadelphia, announced the launch of the 2003 TAP 529 Helping Career Dreams Happen essay and poster contest.

Four grand prizewinners, one in each age category, will receive a $5,000 contribution to a TAP 529 Investment Plan Account set up for their exclusive benefit, and will be honored at a halftime ceremony at the Nov. 23 Philadelphia Eagles game at the new Lincoln Financial Field.

In addition, each grand prizewinner will be granted a day to learn more about his or her dream career. Four runners-up, one in each age category, will receive a $1,000 contribution to a TAP 529 Investment Plan Account for their exclusive benefit.

Lecture planned

A Constitution Day Lecture will be delivered at Saint Vincent College, Latrobe, on Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the Science Center Amphitheatre by Pennsylvania Attorney General Mike Fisher.

Admission is free and no reservations are required.

This lecture is the first in the 2003-2004 Government and Political Education Series sponsored by the Center for Economic and Policy Education at Saint Vincent College in cooperation with the Alex G. McKenna School of Business, Economics, and Government.

Workshops planned

Intermediate Unit 1 and Economics Education Foundation will present several workshops.

Stock Market Game Workshop: The Stock Market Game gives students the chance to invest a hypothetical $100,000 in a real-time portfolio. Economics Education Foundation (EEF) will pay the $15/team cost and the $25/new teacher cost for all teachers attending the workshop ($500 limit). The workshop is Sept. 10, 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. for $5, dinner included, at IU1 Room 119B.

Economics in the Environment Workshop: Explore planet earth from an environmental and economic perspective on Oct. 9, 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at IU1 Room 119A. Cost is $5, dinner included.

Business Plan Competition Workshop: The Business Plan Competition exposes students to the world of entrepreneurship and small business while fostering their creative thinking and problem-solving skills. Teachers attending will receive copies of “How to Write a Successful Business Plan” and a teacher’s manual as a companion piece for the competition. The workshop is Nov. 5, 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. in IU1 Room 119A at a cost of $5, dinner included.

Degree offered

Seton Hill University, Greensburg, is offering an accelerated master of business administration degree.

Classes meet one day per week for four hours and are available on evenings and Saturdays. Each course is eight weeks long, and a rolling admissions policy allows students to enter the program in August, October, January, March, May and June. Specializations in management and accounting are available.

Deadline looms

College-bound high school students who want to take the ACT Assessment on the Oct. 25 national test date should register by the postmark deadline of Sept. 19.

The late registration deadline is Oct. 3 and an additional fee is required for late registration. Students can get registration materials from their school counselor or register online at www.act.org

Career night set

The Westmoreland County School Counselors Association will hold the annual College, Technical School and Career Night from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17 at Westmoreland County Community College, Youngwood.

The fair is free and open to the public.

Conference announced

Soldiers and Sailors National Military Museum and Memorial in Oakland will host its first in a series of conferences on the American Conflicts.

This conference can be used by teachers to earn Act 48 credits and is co-sponsored with the Fort Pitt Museum. The conference will begin on Monday, Sept. 15 with a wine and cheese reception at the Fort Pitt Museum. The evening will include keynote speaker Dr. David Dixon of Slippery Rock University and a tour of the museum. On Tuesday, Sept. 16 the conference will be held at Soldiers & Sailors from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The day will consist of keynote speaker Martin West from Fort Ligonier, three morning sessions, three afternoon sessions, breakfast and lunch.

Program detailed

The West Virginia University Perley Isaac Reed School of Journalism has launched the first online integrated marketing communications master’s degree program in the nation.

Designed specifically for working media professionals, the program allows them to earn academic credit and build innovative communication skills online.

The degree program, which began Aug. 15, has enrolled 17 professional students from across the nation. IMC Director Assistant Professor Archie Sader estimates that as many as 150 students will be enrolled in the program within the next three years.

The program targets media professionals in advertising, public relations and media marketing who want to earn a master’s degree.

IMC courses are taught by School of Journalism faculty, faculty from across the nation and regional and national industry experts. New student cohorts will start in both the fall and spring terms. Students must have two years of professional experience in any area of communications and meet other requirements to be accepted into the program.
