Rendell to visit Greene County
Gov. Ed Rendell will be in Greene County today to announce a cooperative project that will treat acidic water from the Shannopin mine and turn it into an industrial resource. Rendell will hold a press conference at the Shannopin Mine portal near Bobtown at 5 p.m. Thursday to announce the cooperative effort between the state Department of Environmental Protection, the state Department of Community and Economic Development, the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority, AMD Reclamation Inc. and Dana Mining Co.
Water is continuing to fill the abandoned mine and could break through by the end of 2004 in Bobtown, right into Dunkard Creek.
The site has been discussed for a treatment plant that would clean the mine discharge water for use at a proposed power plant in West Virginia.
Dana Mining Co., which is mining in southeastern Greene County, is in jeopardy of losing its mineable coal reserves because the mine pool is continuing to rise.
Greene County and other state officials are expected to attend Thursday’s announcement.
