Poppy sale set American Legion Post 51, Uniontown, will start distribution of poppies, a red crepe paper flower made by disabled veterans in hospitals and poppy workrooms in 40 states.

The American Legion is the first national organization to adopt the poppy as its memorial flower, during the national convention in Cleveland in 1920. The auxiliary also made the poppy its national flower at its convention in Kansas City in 1921.

Proceeds from the sale of poppies goes for rehabilitation of veterans, hospitalized servicemen, disabled veterans and aid to the needy veterans and their families. Abriana Morgan Gunnoe, daughter of Bruce and Michelle Gunnoe of Uniontown, was chosen Poppy Princess by the American Legion Post 51 Auxiliary.

She is a kindergarten student at Hatfield Elementary School and the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Gaydos of Mayflower Drive and Dr. and Mrs. Margaret Gunnoe of Smithfield.

Diabetic group to meet

Fayette Home Care Diabetic Support Group will meet from 6:30 to 8 p.m. May 18 in the Uniontown Hospital’s Heritage Conference Room.

The meeting will feature diet information and a cooking demonstration. Norma Simbra, dietitian at Fayette Home Care, will be the guest speaker.

There is no charge to attend. For reservations, call 724-439-1610.

The American Red Cross will hold the following blood drives:

– 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, May 3, Third Presbyterian Church, Uniontown.

– 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, Uniontown Senior High School.

– 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, Geibel Catholic High School, Connellsville.

– Noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 12, Masontown Volunteer Fire Department.

– 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday, May 17, PennDOT.

– Noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, Brownsville First Christian Church.

– Noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 26, at Uniontown Fire Hall.

Water warning issued

The Tri-County Joint Municipal Authority announced that Wednesday Fredericktown area residents may see discolored water in their homes due to the water company’s insurance provider routinely testing the fire hydrants in the area.
