Authority gives update on sewage system project
REDSTONE TWP. – Engineers told the Colonial Joint Sewage Authority Monday that the construction of a new sewage system in Jefferson and Redstone Townships is progressing well, and the authority may be able to complete the project under budget. Dick Widmer of Widmer Engineering explained that the authority received grant and loan money from PENNVEST for this project. He said that towards the end of the project grant money would be used, and if the authority is not able to use all of the money provided for the project, it will have to be returned.
Marie Hartman, also of Widmer Engineering, suggested that the authority and the engineers begin looking for possible extension areas.
“We need to look at possible areas for line extensions to pick up some additional customers,” said Hartman.
Widmer said that it would be in everyone’s best interest to build some line extensions and use all the grant money available.
“It is grant money. So it would not behoove you or the customers to not use all of it,” said Widmer. “There are always a few places where you can pick up additional customers.”
Widmer said that any new customers picked up would be given an appropriate amount of time to pay the mandatory tap in fee.
The authority agreed to schedule a work session to discuss possible areas for line extensions.
The authority also plans to advertise for a plant operator, and they will likely accept proposals from four candidates that Widmer said he would notify of the position. The position requires someone with a C1 class license or better, and the plant operator would be required to come to the plant every other day.
Hartman said the authority must also file an application for water service at the new pump station with Pa. American Water.
The authority will have a reorganization meeting on Jan. 3 at 3 p.m. with a regular monthly meeting to follow.
