More donations arrive for Give-A-Christmas
The generosity of Herald-Standard readers continues to be apparent as they sent $1,683 Thursday to the 2004 Give-A-Christmas campaign. This brings the total to $10,917. “Thank you so much,’ said Sparkle, the Christmas star. “There are many, many readers who care about those in need and are willing to join the campaign. We appreciate everything you do. But remember, we only have a short time left to reach our goal of $35,000. We will continue to collect until noon on Dec. 23.’
Donations Thursday included $500 from Dawson Grange 419 in Lower Tyrone Township, $300 from the All Around Fence Co. in Menallen Township, $175 from the Brownsville Elementary teachers at Cardale, Central and Cox-Donahey, $125 from Haydentown Christian Church, and $100 from a Uniontown couple.
“Wow! These are very generous gifts,’ said Sparkle.
Some of the donors sent notes:
“This is a donation from the Brownsville Area School District Elementary teachers (Cardale, Central and Cox-Donahey elementary schools). The teachers participated in a ‘jeans for charity’ and donated $20 each for the privilege of wearing jeans to work every other Friday. A total of $680 was collected and split between four charities: the United Way, Sparkle Give-A-Christmas, The Fayette County Community Food Bank and the Scholarship Fund at Brownsville Area High School.’

The Ladies Aid Society of Calvin United Presbyterian Church in Brownsville also participated, sending this message: “Sparkle, Please accept our donation. We all hope you make your goal. May all of you and all our servicemen have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. God bless you.’
Sparkle’s mailbag also included Christmas cards from Joe and Donna Mehalek of New Salem, Diane Holt of Uniontown, and these kind words:
“Dear Sparkle, Enclosed is our contribution in support of your annual holiday campaign. This year’s contribution is in memory of the late Ruby Goldsmith Shaw, who was the owner of Ruby’s Beauty Biz and Boutique, located in downtown Uniontown for many years. Ruby was a great friend to many, and a true embodiment of the word ‘missionary.’ Ruby dearly loved children, having helped so many of us with our own in so many ways! Box 1147, Uniontown 15401 or brought to the desks of the Herald-Standard offices in Connellsville, Brownsville and Uniontown weekdays during business hours. Also, Sparkle cans have been placed in 250 store locations in the Herald-Standard distribution area.
