Readers donate $1,140 to Give-A-Christmas
The generosity of Herald-Standard readers continues to shine through as they donated $1,140 to the 2004 Give-A-Christmas campaign Thursday, bringing the total to $18,797. “It’s so wonderful to see people think of others, particularly at this time of year,’ said Sparkle, the Christmas star. “Remember, all the money raised by Give-A-Christmas supports the work of the Salvation Army, which helps so many people. And the money you give goes to your local unit of the Salvation Army, so you are helping your neighbors.’
Thursday’s donations came from Brownsville, Chalk Hill, Uniontown, Smithfield, Fairchance, Republic, Connellsville and Hopwood.
Friends of Brnich’s Bar in High House gave a $460 gift and sent this message: “Dear Sparkle: During this most wonderful time of the year, it brings us much happiness to be able to donate $460 to the Sparkle campaign. We wish you success and truly respect and admire the good work being done by the Salvation Army. Best wishes to all for Christmas joy and many blessings in the coming year.’
The Fayette School of Ballet in Uniontown and Robin and Ken Gibson of Legacy Sound Contracting in Fairchance each donated $100.
“Dear Sparkle: The Fayette School of Ballet held an in-the-studio performance Thursday, Dec. 10, titled ‘Mother Frost’ to raise money for a donation of $100. Merry Christmas!’ Director Kelly Jenkins.
“Sparkle: We’re hoping you reach your goal! Good luck.’ Robin and Ken Gibson.
An individual also made a $200 donation.
Groups that participated included Evans Manor United Methodist Women, which sent this note: “Merry Christmas, Sparkle. Hope this will help to make someone’s Christmas a little brighter.’ Treasurer Ruth Beattie, Community United Methodist Women.
“Thank you all so much for helping us with this cause,’ said Sparkle. “But if you’re thinking about participating, please do so now. We want to reach our goal of raising $35,000 and our deadline for collections is Thursday. That’s just a few days away.’

The Herald-Standard will continue to collect funds through noon Thursday, Dec. 23.
The final total will be reported in the Christmas Eve edition.
Donations can be mailed to Give-A-Christmas, P.O. Box 1147, Uniontown 15401 or brought to the desks of the Herald-Standard offices in Connellsville, Brownsville and Uniontown weekdays during business hours. Also, Sparkle cans have been placed in 250 store locations in the Herald-Standard distribution area.
