‘Give-A-Christmas’ receives $3,480 toward goal
Herald-Standard readers continued their support of the 2004 Give-A-Christmas campaign Friday, contributing another $3,480 to the holiday fund-raiser. The donations raised the campaign’s total to $22,277, toward a goal of $35,000, all of which will benefit the Salvation Army.
“People in our community have always been so generous, and they’re proving it again,” said Sparkle, the Christmas star, mascot of Give-A-Christmas. “But time is running out. We have less than a week to reach our goal, so every little bit helps.”
Friday’s donations came from Uniontown, Masontown, Lake Lynn, Brownsville, Nemacolin, Carmichaels and Markleysburg.
Sepic Orthodontics contributed $3,200 from its Uniontown and Masontown offices. The money came from the offices’ Halloween candy buy-back effort, which sent candy to troops in Iraq to give to needy children.
Additionally, several individuals gave donations ranging from $10 to $50.
“We really appreciate every donation, and hope the community continues to give,” Sparkle said.
Friday’s donations came from the following:
Sepic Orthodontics, Uniontown and Masontown, from their Halloween candy buy-back event; Springhill Furnace Presbyterian Church, Lake Lynn, in memory of the Rev. James Tweardy; Inez Friend and family, Uniontown; Journey Myers, Brownsville; Frank and Ann Horvath, Uniontown, in honor of grandson Marine Lance Cpl. Wesley Hull serving in Iraq; Joe and Betty Hudak, Uniontown, to remind us that Jesus is the reason for the season; Jamie, Russ, Corey, Adam and Breanna Filburn, Uniontown, in memory of “The Big Guy,” our beloved pastor, the Rev. James R. Tweardy; Michael, Rose and Michael Gabeletto, Nemacolin, in memory of longtime friend, Knappy, who passed away right after Christmas last year; Kathy and Tye Plasko, Carmichaels, in loving memory of Lillian A. Girod and James P. Girod; Jim and Susan Claar, Uniontown, in memory of the Rev. Jim Tweardy; Joann and Carl Bontrager, Markleysburg, in memory of our sister Joyce Fischer and in memory of the Rev. Jim Tweardy.
All donations go to help the Salvation Army, and contributors may denote which Salvation Army service unit they’d like their gift to support.
“So, by giving you can help people in your own neighborhood,” Sparkle added.
The Herald-Standard will continue to collect funds through noon Thursday, Dec. 23.
The final total will be reported in the Christmas Eve edition.
Donations can be mailed to Give-A-Christmas, P.O. Box 1147, Uniontown 15401 or brought to the desks of the Herald-Standard offices in Connellsville, Brownsville and Uniontown weekdays during business hours.
