Two people charged in Brownsville weapons incident
BROWNSVILLE – Two Brownsville men are being held at the Fayette County Prison following a weekend incident in which at least one gun was fired at the Dunlap Lodge of the Elks located on Brownsville Avenue. Police first got involved in the situation when a Redstone Township officer observed an accident at Spring and Market streets around 2:43 a.m. and saw the driver place a gun in his pants as he exited the vehicle. Witnesses told the officer that the driver, Phillip Mosley II, 24, of 254 Clover St., Brownsville, got a ride to the Dunlap Lodge Elks. The Redstone officer then notified Brownsville police and met them at the lodge.
Mosley, who is currently on state parole and not permitted to carry a gun, was taken into custody in front of the lodge after a brief struggle with police.
As Mosley was being placed in the Brownsville police car, a large number of patrons of the lodge left the building, screaming that someone was shooting inside. Antwain Oliver then reportedly came out of the lodge with a loaded handgun, pointing at the Redstone officer who had identified himself as an officer and told Oliver to drop the gun.
According to the affidavit, Oliver did eventually throw the gun down and began to run from the officers, but he was apprehended. Upon returning to the police vehicle, the officers discovered that Mosley was no longer in the car.
According to police, the weapon they recovered that Oliver had thrown down had been reported stolen to the Centerville Police in May. In addition, Oliver has been convicted of felonies including carrying a firearm on school property, making him ineligible to carry or possess a firearm.
Mosley was arraigned before District Justice Herb Mitchell on Monday. Mosley was charged with firearms not to be carried without a license, person not to possess, use, manufacture, control, sell or transfer firearms, resisting arrest, escape, disorderly conduct and theft by unlawful taking for allegedly taking the officer’s handcuffs, driving under suspension, driving at a safe speed, careless driving, reckless driving and accidents involving damage to unattended vehicles or property. He is in the Fayette County Prison in lieu of $50,000 bond.
Oliver was arraigned Sunday before District Justice Rick Vernon on charges of firearms not to be carried without a license, persons not to possess, use, manufacture, control, sell or transfer firearms, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, aggravated assault, possessing instruments of crime and receiving stolen property. Oliver is being held at the Fayette County Prison in lieu of $100,000 bond.
